View SW from my back deck: Sunday, June 24th - 11:30 am.
Pikes Peak summit just left of dark smoke.
From Ute Valley Park, just below my home - Pikes Pk barely in view on left edge: Sunday, 3:10 pm.
Though appearing close, the fire is still fairly distant at this time - not a real concern for the neighborhood.
THE BIG DAY: From my deck, Tuesday, 6/26. 1:30 pm. .. Pikes Pk summit hidden by smoke.
Now from my position atop the knoll above my home: 4:30 pm.
Having crested the ridge line, the fire itself can now be seen. ... Most of the homes visible here were saved.
The top edge of the Mountain Shadows community, which backs up to national forest land.
Neighbors on the bluff with me.
The inferno was definitely being driven by fierce winds.
Nothing can prevent the fire from rapidly advancing downslope, though there were many helicopter water drops.
Approaching the rock quarry here, as the smoke gets closer.
5:10 pm - a shift in the wind is now carrying the smoke to us.
My house on left. ... Not good to be outside now.
6:30 from my back deck.
I was getting ready to abandon ship due to the dense smoke, then the police announced mandatory evacuation.
FIVE DAYS LATER: I finally reclaimed my home Saturday morning. :) .. This is now 7:00 Sunday morning, 7/1, looking at bluff across the street from my house.
Most photos were taking from atop this rock formation, where I'm now heading.
View NW - showing Blodgett Pk at right end of ridge. .. I climb this peak quite often; the fire mostly spared it.
Looking down at my neighborhood, Eagle View Middle School and Ute Valley Park above and right.
My home is in the center, facing us.
SW view - and will pan to right.
The hills are dark due to the burn.
Back left now but telephoto - the high area E of Pikes Pk was not touched nor any other part of the peak, as the fire did not cross Hwy 24.
Slope in middle, above Mtn Shadows, is burned.
My brother's home in Mtn Shadows can be seen here as unburnt. .. Many more homes were burned farther downslope out of sight.
A Colorado record of 346 homes were lost - with two bodies found in one home. .. More burned homes bottom right.
Continuing pan to right.
Ute Valley Park, where I regularly jog, remains closed today.
Note small isolated section of UVP that burned.
