A little under an hour's drive from Colorado Springs to the Horsethief Park TH - the start of our clickwise loop climb.
We departed the trailhead at 8:30. ... Sentinel Point looms ahead. .. Web link below:
https://www.summitpost.org/sentinel-point/154197 ... Use back arrow to return to album.
We'll approach the summit from the left; then descend from the saddle on the right. - well, that's the plan anyway.
Most cairns are friendly - though some may be wild.
A new friend for Greg!
His camera not working at the moment.
What he was hoping to capture.
We'll top this crux boulderfield by hugging the edge of the forest.
Whew - glad to have that done. .. A view to the north.
Oh, we still have the summit ahead.
Navigating the summit rocks.
Like a mountain goat!
On top at 11:30 for a three-hour ascent. .. Pikes Peak to the east.
Can you spot the Geological Survey marker?
[From a prior climb.] ... The elevation is 12,527'. ... RT distance about 6 miles; gain about 2700'.
Next we'll be following the south ridge in the background, then dropping right back into the forest.
Just off the summit - time for lunch.
South just below and along the ridge.
Minor saddle with view to the west. .. We can see the start of our route in valley below.
Telephoto of marmot - the largest critter we spotted. .. They rarely attack two people together. :)
At last, our broad drop-off saddle. .. Left rear, the open pit gold mine outside Victor.
Somewhat steep hillside with a lot of tundra, then a lot more forest. .. Always good to end the day going downhill.
Back on a trail now with a visit by the state flower - Blue Columbine.
Thanks for being that way!
Horsethief Falls, but at very low flow. .. Back to the TH at 2:30 for a 6-hr climb.
Same spot from an earlier time. ... We saw no one until near the end. .. A fine peak with fine weather with a very fine friend. .. Life is good - you be too.
