As seen from the Garden of the Gods Visitor Center. .. We'll be climbing to the top of North Gateway Rock.
Greg's crazy scheme is to top the high point at GoG.
Well, if he's game, I'm willing to give it a shot - however improbable it appears.
Greg the Rock Climber. .. If you magnify the shot, you can see the brushy gully [aka the Tourist Gully] leading up to the prominent notch in the background.
Hey, this is our lucky day - we have both climbing gear and permits. .. We're golden.
Stepping up to the base of the Tourist Gully.
View to rear - is this an awesome place and an awesome day or what!
OK, time to pull on our climbing harnesses and don our helmets. .. Heading up at 11:15.
I'm leading and Greg is following - the first of four pitches here.
The route ahead atop the first pitch. ...[Our rope is 100 feet.]
On the second pitch.
Still more to go ahead.
Third pitch - are we there yet? .. How will we know when we're "there?"
Looming above us - the Kissing Camels.
Fourth pitch ...
... and now the infamous Keyhole - think small.
At last, ready to top the notch.
Over it and now starting down the other side - leaving the rope behind.
A nice long ledge on the left. .. We're heading over to the far notch ahead.
Twenty-second video - click the central triangle to view.
Final short gully, then up the left side ahead.
Fifteen feet to go straight up here - no turning back now. .. Can you see the worn footsteps?
[Panorama shot here.] .. Victory! .. On top of the Garden of the Gods at 1:00 pm - all to ourselves and the angels.
Pikes Peak looming on right.
Oh, Bill came along too.
