Friday, August 18th - enroute from Denver to Seattle, now passing by Mt. Rainier; then on to Anchorage.
Telephoto: looks big at 14,411, but its dwarfed by Denali at 20,310!
This is our trip! .. Full itinerary shows in link below:
Flying into Anchorage; train to Denali; van to Talkeetna & back to Anchorage.
Susitna Place - our sweet B&B in Anchorage - link below:
Friday night at the Glacier Brew House, where most of us first meet up.
Well, they look friendly enough - but ya never know. :) ... The food here was pretty good, but our meals at camp would be far superior!
The trip officially began Sat morning. .. I missed the early market foraging trip. .. We're now all set to hike to Flattop Mtn - link below:
Our group totals 15 - now collecting our lunch bags at the trailhead.
Anchorage behind and below.
Not the summit, but serving as a collection point.
A subset of us made it to the top, which wasn't really flat (well, maybe on a clear day).
Bill's high point for the day - 3,510 feet. .. My Colorado home is at 6600'. :)
Most of our week would be overcast most of the time, but still generally benign weather - and virtually no mosquitos. :)
How do they do that!
Clouds starting to lift.
A subset of us made it back to the TH - enough anyway for the trip to continue. :)
Look quick - a brief glimpse of Flattop.
Back at our Susitna Place campsite - and not overcast. .. We'll pan to the left in the next two shots.
The first of our self-cooked dinners by master chefs Kater and Don.
After much friendly discussion, eventually settling on our route.
Life is good.
Life got even better.
Fixing our sack lunches for Sunday's train ride.
Final gear sorting of luggage - and the end of the "soft" city life.
OK - Sunday morning - no turning back now. .. Note: we're in "Adventure Class"!
The train runs from Seward in the south to Fairbanks in the north. .. Closer shot follows. .. Link below:
Departing Anchorage: 8:15; arriving Denali: 3:40... Don & Kater are driving the vans with our luggage, gear and foraged food.
Seats are assigned, but you could move around just about anywhere.
Domeliner offered a more complete view.
Yep - an overcast day and a little rainy.
Passing a train heading south.
