From the Holiday Expeditions catalog.
[Close-up of text on the next page.]
Who couldn't resist a write-up like this!
Monday morning, 8/4 - the car is packed and Julian & Chris are ready to head out west from Colorado Springs.
Note: [JC] will mark the many later shots taken by Julian or Chris with their camera!
Quick stop on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon - note paddlers on the Colorado River.
Not very wild but I suppose they're having a good time.
Rafters-to-be aside the Colorado River. [The Green River, which we're about to raft, eventually runs into the Colorado in mid-Utah.]
OK, checking out the Dinosaur NM visitor center.
Our trip launches at the top, above the deep trench: Lodore Canyon.
This is the middle section of our trip. Note the Yampa River coming in from the right at the hairpin turn in the Green River.
We camped one night a little to the west of the UT/CO state line - that's Jones Hole Canyon on the north side of the river.
Our take-out the 4th day is where the road first touches the river (left of center) after coming through Split Mtn Cyn .
Vernal, Utah. Having picked up our waterproof bags from Holiday, time now to frantically repack everything.
Rafting can be tough!
Tuesday morning: hope we didn't leave anything out - that really matters.
Three of our four lady guides: Morgan front, Dana behind and head guide Jessica on right.
Everything we own is in those waterproof bags. Guide Katie promises to keep an eye on them.
Two of our three oar boats here; plus another van with both an oar and a paddle boat.
OK - listen up folks. [Our trip has the four lady guides plus 20 clients.]
Jessica offers reassuring words: Most of us will very likely survive!
Some of us may even have fun. :)
This evidently was our "unfun" sub-group. :)
Very early river runners used wooden boats like these.
And here's one of the earliest rubber boats - thankfully retired.
OK - an overview of our route. [This map is showing the roads, but not the rivers.]
We all drove from Vernal to Maybell, then NW to Gates of Lodore.
OK - Now you can see the rivers. [Two close-ups of map follow.]
This shows our put-in point and the first two campsites.
[Note: the Yampa River enters the Green just east of Steamboat Rock.]
Showing our third campsite (Jones Hole) and the take-out point.
Finally, at our put-in point: the Gates of Lodore on the Green River.
Note the canyon "Gates" opening up ahead.
OK folks, last chance to regain your senses and go back home!
Late morning and we're finally rafting the Green.
Color me happy! [First example of a shot by Julian or Chris.]
We'll be in Lodore Canyon today and tomorrow.
[The life jackets are required.]
Time for lunch already - good call.
The guides are also our superb cooks.
Get used to fresh & delectable meals every day.
Fed and ready to cruise. [JC]
Everyone now eager to get back on the water.
Note the paddle boat on the left. People who mis-behaved were sentenced to the paddle boat! :)
[Telephoto of last shot.]
A touch of rapids here.
