Mid-July: Chris is celebrating is BIG 60th (hard to believe) Birthday at home in Riverside.
HEY- A RAFTING TRIP ON THE GREEN RIVER WITH JULIAN & BILL - HOW COOL IS THAT!!
[We weren't sure if Chris's ticker could handle the shock so, just in case, we had Julian brush up on his CPR!]
At last, Friday morning, 8/01/08 - time to head to the Ontario airport ...
... for a non-stop flight to Colorado Springs. Let the Games begin!
SPECIAL thanks to Suzanne, an amazing lady, for pulling it off - for making the impossible come true!
Saturday morning, 8/2: Checking out our three-man tent, although we eventually switched to a two-man and a one-man.
Breakfasts were not too elaborate ...
... but always included brownies! :)
Our visit to Santa Fe. Well, actually at an arts & crafts sale in Woodland Park.
We've embarked on a big counter-clockwise loop around Pikes Peak.
Woodland Park was the first stop; Cripple Creek coming up.
OK, just outside Cripple Creek and in time for some gold mining. [JC]
[JC] identifies shots taken by Julian or Chris with their camera.
Pretty tight fit in the elevator car - everyone exhale and hold your breath.
OK - now you can inhale again.
Earliest drilling: guy on left hammers drill held by guy in center.
[These aren't real people; they're actors.]
Much more advanced drill here.
[This dude is as real as it gets!]
Tool room. [JC]
What they're drilling: holes to place the dynamite that will blow up the wall.
Latest advance in drilling - pretty quick setup, but still quite noisy.
Looking up a vertical shaft.
Riding a rail car in the tunnel.
How many miners can you count?
A big advance: development of whistle signals.
Back outside the mine, our pockets stuffed with high-grade ore, and looking down at Cripple Creek.
Lots of gambling casinos here. [JC]
Circling Pikes Peak massif along the south now.
Our road used to be a rail line, hauling ore to COS for processing.
Circled back to COS at last.
The five-star Broadmoor Hotel and golf courses.
Hitting the big time in Manitou Springs (just west of COS).
My niece Kelly, dishing out Josh & John's ice cream.
This will definitely build up the biceps. Kelly is about to start her freshman college year.
If you didn't get your own, you're outta luck. :)
Back at the ranch, Life is Good!
Chris is reading a letter he wrote to me from Saudi Arabia - some many years ago.
[It's a long letter.]
A quick hike atop the bluff across the street from my home.
My house is the blue-gray one in the center.
Steep descent no problemo.
Hind end of a deer.
OK, Sunday morning at Garden of the Gods.
Looking up at the wall that Julian and I will traverse - along the line of the green plants up high.
Julian carrying the rope.
This is the gully we will attempt to ascend.
