I crashed at the 2WD TH the night before the climb. .. From here it's 8.0 miles RT and 3600' gain to Wetterhorn.
Ascend trail on right - left is for parking.
Be sure to go right, uphill, at this sign (shot in daylight on my return to TH).
I set off in the dark at 5:20 am. ..The first big peak to come into view on the Matterhorn Crk Trail is Matterhorn Pk.
About noon I will summit this peak, ascending up the broad slope seen here on right.
But first, here's the left turnoff for Wetterhorn Pk, my primary goal.
The route ascends the left ridge to the summit.
View back to Matterhorn and now starting to see Uncompahgre Pk on right.
View to my rear, south. .. The TH is down in the distant valley right of center.
A pica friend - they were numerous and very active.
I have long legs. :)
Trail will take you to the saddle on left - then up the ridge.
A little past the saddle now, which I reached about 8:00.
Matterhorn and Uncompahgre to east.
View to my rear.
The summit block is what makes this a gnarly peak - and way fun!
We'll pass the prominent horn on the right side.
The route is pretty well marked.
The horn on left; pass through the notch in the center.
A gnarly steep wall to ascend here in the shade.
Lots of ledges though - NTW.
In general, the rock here is fairly solid - good handholds.
Follow the ledge around the corner.
Top pretty much in view now.
Victory on Wetterhorn at 9:15 − 14,015 ft.
Note the way-gnarly ridge connecting Wetterhorn and Matterhorn.
View south from whence I came.
Click arrow in center to view video pan from summit.
[Matterhorn Peak in the Sierra Nevada (on Yosemite's northern border) is 12,280'.]
[Close-up in next shot.]
I was first today, but on my descent I would soon meet seven more people and two dogs.
Hey, here comes my new friend Zach from Alamosa. .. Zach would soon set off for Matterhorn by the long, exposed ridge, which greatly concerned me.
See - more people and a dog heading up.
This is the prominent horn seen west of the summit.
