OK, Visitors Center sign with Eagle Pk looming behind [shot after ascent].
Kevin & Elizabeth starting the New Year right!
Next time - we'll definitely bring an Authorized Vehicle!
[Start of the actual trail - taken on an earlier trip with my niece.]
Making our way past the crux (read very icy) section.
Ice has overflown onto the trail on the left.
Apparently wearing virtual crampons, Kevin ascends the frozen waterfall.
[Of course it's possible for the frozen waterfall to suddenly thaw!]
Piece of cake!
[Being an accomplished ice hockey player helps!]
Some amazing ice sculptures.
Hey - I can do that too!
Time out for a little rock scrambling.
OK - you can bring the ladder over now!
The upper Aspen meadow (shot about a month ago).
[Same spot: Aspen meadows can also suddenly thaw!]
OK, on the final stretch up to the summit - Pikes Peak yonder.
I love my new Christmas jacket.
Well, of course, we took the 3rd class variation to the summit.
Summit ahead - we can't turn back now, no matter the strong cold wind.
The summit just barely emerges above the trees.
VICTORY - look at us at 9368 feet!
[Blodgett Pk is 9423']
Down at the east face look-out.
USAFA below; Kansas yonder.
Kevin decides to go for the shortcut down the east face.
But first, maybe he can fix the broken flagpole.
[Or is he signaling for help?]
Bummer - not this time.
Kevin decides to rejoin the gnarly team for the descent.
Why stay on the trail when we can take the frozen luge run down!
Back to the crux - only harder when descending. However, we all survived and are still friends! :)
Thanks for joining our little New Year's day adventure. NTW, Bill
