As seen from Visitors Center - we're aiming to top out on South Gateway Rock.
Friday afternoon: South Gateway Rock - aiming for the high point up the right ridge on the skyline.
The highest ridge line in rear.
OK - after some quick instruction, Kevin is ready to belay my lead. .. [Kevin did not bring his cellphone, so no images taken by him.]
This is a five-bolt, single-pitch route - 2nd or third bolt here. .. Kevin seen belaying below.
Just clipped this one, on way to top.
All right - Kevin is following now and "cleaning" the pitch.
Shot a couple of weeks earlier - Bill's first ascent of route, topping out here.
Both of us on top now, at the rappel anchors.
Kevin has a lot experience at rapping. .. Pikes Peak in distance, just right of center.
Rapp anchors - always at least two bolts with chains. .. Higher points in rear are on North Gateway Rock.
View to east, with the Garden of the Gods Club on ridge, left of center.
Telephoto - Kevin was a guest here the prior few days on Aerospace business.
View south - Cheyenne Mtn in distance on left; Montezuma's Tower - the fin below right.
OK - panorama shot from north over to east.
Pan from east over to south.
Pan - from south, past west, back to north. ... Pikes Peak in center.
Off rappel and now coiling our 200-ft rope; the five quick-draws clipped in his harness.
VIDEO - coiling isn't trivial.
Heading back now with side view of Montezuma's Tower ahead.
It's a quite thin rock fin - and a classic climb. .. Maybe we'll top it on Kevin's next visit.
OK, Saturday morning - from my deck the view of the Ute Valley Park ridge - the line across the center; Pikes Peak on right.
Starting at north end. ...It's a lot rockier and jagged than suggested in the prior image.
