Sunday, 6:45 am - passing Garden of the Gods enroute to the Crags Trailhead.
The upper Pikes Peak summit is definitely hiding.
Shot from highway SW of Woodland Park - peak still obscured.
I set out from the TH at close to 8:00. .. Elevation here about 10,400; about six miles or so to summit.
There are two log bridges near start - plus a creek crossing a little later.
Sentinel Pt (12,527) barely visible. .. It can be climbed from Horsethief Park TH.
Above treeline now, approaching saddle below Devils Playground.
View to rear.
You could either walk through the snow patches, fairly firm earlier in the morning, or skirt them.
I generally did the former. .. I had boots and low gaiters, which worked fine.
OK, Devils Playground just out of sight behind rock band on left, but PP Highway clearly in view.
Summit still obscured by clouds, at least intermittently. .. That's Little Pike mostly in view, left of center.
Well, that was bizarre - a lone skier passed me!
Oh, a party of four. .. They were dropped off at DP and will ski the nearby Little Italy couloir that overlooks Glen Cove.
Yes - the PP summit finally in view now!
For a moment anyway.
View to rear, having crossed the PP Hwy at DP.
Little Pike on right; it will be passed along its north slope (left side).
First of two highway tangents to trail. .. You don't have to go on the hwy. :)
Left of last shot - and will continue panning left for two more shots.
The route hereon is generally well marked with cairns. .. Flank of LP on right.
This snow "patch" does not want to be skirted.
OK, about to enter the final rock scramble to the summit.
