The adventure begins - Monday morning, 8/20/12.
Most cars park low around the 8,000' level - as the road is super rocky and gets notoriously rough.
Some cars drove up much farther than I did.
Beyond this point, you had better have a pretty serious 4WD vehicle.
One of the tougher road sections.
This guy evidently died here while four-wheeling.
From the car at 8000', the backpack to Lake Como (~11800') took me a little over four hours, including time to put on rain gear.
Little Bear summit in center is hidden in clouds here.
I'll be camping among trees at the other end of the lake. .. Road/trail continues on left/north side of lake.
At home at last.
Late in the day the weather cleared.
Scoping out LIttle Bear (LB) now. .. The west ridge route is right of the summit. .. The ascent gully to the ridge is out of sight to the right.
[This was shot the next day on my way out - the ascent gully is up the prominent notch on the right - not the low point much farther left.]
6:30 Tues morning, aiming for the prominent right notch in the ridge.
There is a use trail(s).
View of the gnarly ridge connecting LB with Blanca Pk, whose top is barely seen here. ... Ellingwood Pt on left.
Lake Como in background.
Atop ridge now, view to S/SE with low cloud layer.
Route going forward, on the east side of the ridge.
The route is generally evident by trails and cairns.
We'll be passing another notch ahead; making our way to the first gully right of the summit.
Looking down this notch; probably part of Blue Lakes.
View back to rear of route.
We'll be ascending up toward the first u-notch on left.
