Mt Sherman, part of the Mosquito Range, is roughly midway between Fairplay and Leadville.
It is most easily accessed from County Rd 18, just south of Fairplay, by where Hwy 9 hits 285.
Route 1: Fourmile Crk is the 2WD TH. .. Crossing three snowpatches, I was able to drive just over a mile farther up the road - 10.6 miles from the highway. ..[Map per Gerry Roach's excellent CO 14er guide.]
Monday morning, 7:20, on CR 18. .. I believe Sherman is the far right peak.
Two moose cows moved down off the road as I approached.
[I think this is my first moose sighting in Colorado.]
7:55 & ready to move out from about 11,600. .. I parked about a mile past Leavick (2WD TH).
Mt Sheridan (13,748) on left; Mt Sherman (14,036) on right. .. Both named for Union generals.
Taking a shortcut to the Sheridan-Sherman saddle. .. I would follow these snowshoe tracks as far as I could.
I chose not to bring snowshoes, as the snow appeared pretty consolidated.
It was reasonably firm in the early morning, softening some later in the day.
Note: mine ruin in background.
Not so busy today.
Sherman summit should be the highest bump on right.
Note - the track I'm following suddenly turns back. .. Bummer as I'll be sinking slightly more now.
Amazingly, there were no other tracks, especially as Sunday had been a good weather day.
Well above the mine structures now.
Next shot will be a pan to the left of this view.
Very far off - that's Pikes Pk coming into view.
[Any photo can be enlarged by moving mouse to the right edge and selecting from menu.]
Approaching ridge leading to the summit.
View of ridge to the south - and Mt Sheridan. .. I'm hitting the ridge well above the saddle.
View back to the southeast.
OK - atop the ridge now (having added wind pants and facemask due to brisk wind).
Sherman summit is out of view. .. [That's twin-summitted Gemini Peak (13,951) in the back.]
Panning farther west and picking up Dyer Mtn (13,855).
Looks like a good candidate for summit - but wrong.
Yep - high winds come from the west and snowload the east slope, possibly creating cornices.
View back south to Sheridan - the Collegiate Peaks beyond.
The top of the summit ridge is somewhat extended.
Ryan from Loveland finally catching up (the only other person I'd see).
View to the west - Turquoise Lake beyond Leadville.
