From Gerry Roach's guide. .. Grays-Torreys combo is 9.0 miles RT and 3,600 ft. gain from Stevens Gulch TH.
Our route is green trail (1) and blue trail (5).
Thanks to the gnarly Pilot, we arrived at the TH!
Starting from Stevens Gulch Trailhead, 11,230', at close to 8:30.
Our first glimpse: Grays left and Torreys right.
L-R: Bill, Rick Phelps with kids Johanna & Ben, and Rick McMorran.
Torreys is looking taller here, but it's actually 3 feet shorter!
Climbing Grays first.
Mostly a rocky slog. :(
Telephoto - looking over at Torreys.
Junction to Torreys. .. We kept left to Grays.
Looking back north to trailhead down at edge of forest.
We must be there. .. GPS says 14,280'. :)
Grays saddle over to Torreys. .. Torreys route is up this east ridge.
Switchbacking up Grays. .. Will we ever get there?
YES, we are there: Grays, 14,270' - Johanna's first 14er and Ben's second (after Pikes Peak).
Mt. Evans (14,260') directly behind Rick; Mt. Bierstadt (14,060') to right of Evans. .. Pikes Pk (14,110') is distant summit on right.
Do not disturb: Lunch #1 in progress.
Trust me - they're actually fairly friendly dudes.
Lake and ski resort to west. .. I'm thinking Dillon Reservoir and Keystone to left.
Telephoto of Evans - Bierstadt. .. Note dark knife-edge ridge connecting them.
Starting descent over to Torreys.
Johanna and her pole-bearers.
Down is fun!
Can you see the car?
At Grays-Torreys saddle.
Hey - up is NOT so much fun anymore!
All Right! - Victory on 14er #2: Torreys Pk (14,267').
Looking down Torreys' gnarly NE (Kelso) Ridge.
Lunch #2 - note Rick's spiffy stove and pot. .. Note also Grays and Pikes Peak in background!
Also note switchbacks up Grays.
