OK, exactly a year later and back in the White River NF near New Castle. Rick arrived a day sooner to set up camp and scope out hunting locations. Ben and I arrived Friday afternoon.
[Refer to pix of our prior trip - dated 10/20-23/05.]
Our closest camping neighbors - three guys from Maryland.
They brought everything - including the kitchen stove.
Life in the yurt.
0-dark hundred Sat morning.
Can you spell bushwhacking?
Can you move in it?
Both Ben and Rick had bolt-action rifles this year. Loading up with 30.06 ammo.
Heading to pretty much the same spot we had last year, and where Rick had taken a bull.
Checking out a bull on the far hillside.
Yeah, there was residual snow on the ground - and it was cold.
Rats - bull was on the skyline, but had just ducked out of sight.
[This is a telephoto shot.] Even if the bull was closer, you can't shoot when they're on the skyline!
Settling down in our "ambush" spot.
An old Indian trick: if you play dead, the elk will come closer!
Does it make sense to wear camo and orange??
Ya don't wanta argue with this gnarly dude!
Checking out the carcass of Rick's kill last year.
Not enough even for soup.
View to SE. Although it had snowed on Thursday, we had clear weather the rest of the weekend. I should say clear but quite cool.
Setting up our second ambush site.
Too late to capture here, but I saw an elk cow on the middle skyline.
Oh well, heading back to camp.
He's even more dangerous with a beer can in his hand!
The highlight of our day - hot showers and hot pool in Glenwood Springs.
Then dinner at Qdoba.
OK - rarin' to go at 0500 Sunday. Ben slept in the truck.
Happy Rick - he had just dumped something in the tent!
Our Maryland friends heading out.
OK - quietly returning to our hunting site.
