From the Barr Trail parking lot, just a little above the cog railroad depot on Ruxton Ave. .. Some sources list the gain at 7600 or 7700 ft. .. More info here: http://www.barrcamp.com/hike.php
First good view of the summit - this is after all the early switchbacks and having rounded the top of that big ridge.
Same spot - telephoto.
This trail junction is a few minutes past the turnoff for the side-trail to the Incline.
Looks closer - making progress!
Telephoto - you can barely make out the Summit House now.
About to enter the Barr Camp compound - time from trailhead to BC was 3.25 hrs.
OK - we've hiked about 6.5 miles with a gain of about 3800 ft. .. It took me 3.25 hours with a daypack. .. This main cabin includes the kitchen/dining area, plus the bunkhouse in the rear.
Note at top: candy bars for sale - bring cash. .. There are also shirts and caps for sale, plus sodas & water.
Looking back out the front door.
Bunkhouse through door ahead.
Note: ten contiguous (touching) mattresses - no sheets, blankets or pillows, nor storage area.
The wood stove here is NOT used for heat at night.
From bunkhouse porch, view down to toilets - bring a small flashlight!
Bring plenty of quarters! .. [Just kidding.]
Our amazing and gracious hosts: Teresa and Neal Taylor, here since 2005. .. Both are also ultra-mountain runners.
OK - adios. .. I'm heading on to the Bottomless Pit area.
Past Barr Camp, note junction for Trail 632 heading to the Pit; Trail 620 continues ascent to summit.
Trail to right: 2.4 miles to Pit. .. [4.8 miles to PP summit.]
Moving out of treeline and entering large cirque.
Note waterfall/cascade ahead on valley floor - headwater of the S Frk of French Creek.
Route will take us just below the upper cascade.
What a thrill - a small patch of blue columbines!
