OK - 7:45 and ready to launch from the upper East Mesa Trailhead.
L-R: Arnold, Joel, Corry (Kurt's spouse), Kelley and Kurt, who generously organized the trip but is "Not the Leader"!
[Be sure to check out Joel's Pix to see Gnarly Bill in action.]
Check out Tom Jones' terrific website for detailed info on Mystery Canyon (including map).
This is where we'll drop down into Mystery Canyon. Does it look deep already?
Joel is Mr. Clean today.
It's a long and steep descent for awhile.
OK - our first rapp, a short one.
The clean guy with the green hands - that would be Joel!
Now a series of closely-spaced rapps.
We typically descend on one rope, rather than doubled. The last guy has to figure out how to pull the rope! :)
OK - after we pull the rope, we're definitely committed now!
It's always nice when someone else goes first into a pool of uncertain depth. :)
[Right, low light means low shutter speed. Sorry about that.]
It opens up a little for a while here.
Handling open areas can be very tiring!
It's not easy folding these suckers up.
Rats - a big pond has formed behind the huge landslide dam. When I was here in 4/04, this was dry.
Almost but not quit a swimmer.
Climbing up the back of the dam wall.
Looking forward. The canyon will get tight again.
Joel holds his camera with his teeth sometimes.
Well, it worked for Joel, but the cord does look pretty stiff and worn.
Let's see if we can make it safer.
Good job, Kurt. Now the rest of us can go. :)
Joel's favorite descent is on logs!
Serious stemming can sometimes avoid getting wet.
OK - 12:45, and we're at the top of the Mystery Springs rapp.
